Week beginning Monday 12 September 2011

Weekly Intro
Back in chapter one we were introduced to John the Baptist. He was a pretty cool dude. We saw that he was a gutsy, Bear Grylls-style guy who stood firm in calling the Israelites to repentance-to turn back to God-and be baptised with water. And more than that, he also had come to prepare the way for the Christ (God’s chosen Saviour). As a result he started to pull a fair crowd! But, true to his word, this week we get to see John set aside his own success and push the spotlight onto Jesus. We get a taste of why Jesus is truly supreme and how we should respond to him.

As a mini refresher, flip back to chapter 1 and check out the difference between John’s and Jesus’ baptism. (Clue: see 1:33) What is the significance of this?

Day 1 – Read John 3:22-26
What are Jesus and John doing in vv21-22?

Why do John’s disciples start arguing? What does this reveal about their motives?

Pray

Day 2 – Read John 3:27-30
How does John respond to the argument? (See vv27-28)

Who do you think the bride and bridegroom are in v29?

What does v30 teach us about John’s character and Jesus’ identity?

Pray

Day 3 – Read John 3:31-36
What do we learn about Jesus’ identity and relationship to God here?

In verse 36, what do you think it means to ‘believe in the Son’?
What are the two responses (and consequence of each response)?

Pray

Day 4 – Read John 3:22-26
What did it cost John to proclaim Jesus’ superiority?

How has John’s testimony about Jesus challenged and/or encouraged your own?

What pointers or reasons for why Jesus is superior do we see in: vv31-35?

Pray

Reflection Day
What have you learnt about John’s view of Jesus?

Was John right to hold such a view?

How does your view of Jesus stack up against John’s?

(How) does your life reflect that Jesus is Lord?

What have you learnt about yourself this week?

Write down any questions that are on your mind and bring to Soulies / Small Group.
